Pensacola Beach Petal Top Sew-Along Day 4

intro

We have reached day 4! Today we will work on the petals. I did want to hack the buttons first though.

The pattern calls for any button up to 1″. to hack it, you can turn your button hole horizontal and sew 2 button holes instead. Doing so you would need to select smaller buttons around a 1/2″. You could also choose to use snaps, Kam snaps are pictured below. (Size 20)

This is also a great time to embellish the front of the bodice if you are adding a button to the front.

Another quick tip! If you used bias you can add it all the way around the neckline as I have done here:

If you choose to use this method, make sure you do 2 things:

  1. Be sure to miter the corners on the back placket and sandwich it into place rather than assembling it the traditional way bias is usually sewn on. (shown below)
  2. DO NOT sew past the where the seam allowance will fold under later when attaching the petals. That, you can leave unfinished until you have attached the petals! (shown below 2nd picture)

Moving on to the Petals! There are a variety of options yet again. Just as you saw with the sleeves, we have a plethora of choices. You can add Bias, Trim, Make your own ruffles, Lace, Gathered lace, pleated ruffle, ric-rac, piping and anything else you can think of! See below for some additional examples.

As you can see there is a WIDE variety of ways to hem your petals. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Tomorrow will be placket help in case you find you have any trouble creating a continuous placket. See you back here tomorrow for day 5!
